Voices from the Farnesina – Italian alphabet – Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation

A journey has a beginning and an end: to determine the route, in this case, are the initial and final letter of the Italian alphabet – A for Literary Agency, Z for Zibaldone -. A gymkhana that associates each sign with a pillar of Italian publishing, building an articulated and fluid vision of the passionate world of books. The podcast series Voci dalla Farnesina – Alfabeto italiano, produced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and storielibere.fm, in collaboration with the cultural association Monteverdelegge, tells the story of the constantly evolving publishing of our country. At the head of the path we find Maria Teresa Carbone – author, journalist, translator – who from time to time meets the protagonists of publishing houses: booksellers (L), editors (R), translators (T), literary agents (A), graphic designers (G), illustrators, graphic designers, cartoonists (D) and small publishers (X-small). Every title, however, needs a context, to be launched and received. We therefore see the emergence of other areas that determine and nourish the vitality of books: press office (U), festival (F), prize (P), school. (S). Not to mention the horizons of the contemporary, which overcome material barriers with digital books (virtual as V), go beyond national borders (world as M), or give books another guise (audiobooks, O as ears). The same publishing is invested with the rules of marketing, which require meticulous attention to the promotion of books and beginner authors: novelties (N), back covers (Q), catalog (C), debutants (E). A look at the new that does not neglect the classics (Z as zibaldone), but raises them by making them rediscover. Finally, we arrive at the recipients who have conquered a slice of the publishing market, favoring the birth of additional genres: children (B), young adult (Y). At the end of the course we can admire the architecture of the book, understand the sophisticated skills required by the publishing industry (Know how) and cultivate the need for a society thirsty for ideas (I). The Salon du livre in Paris (2023) and the Buchmesse in Frankfurt (2024) – which will welcome Italy as a guest of honour – will be a precious opportunity to celebrate the driving force of the Italian publishing world.
